How to Split Band Pay Fairly After Every Gig

Splitting a gig fee fairly and transparently is one of those things that feels simple until it isn't. The band leader gets paid by the client, deducts costs, and then what? If your answer is "I Venmo everyone and hope for the best," there's a better way.

The Standard Band Pay Split

Most cover bands use a straightforward model: total fee minus expenses (PA hire, parking, travel, agent commission) equals the pool. That pool is divided equally among members, or according to a pre-agreed split if some earn more (e.g. the band leader or musical director).

Whatever model you use, the important thing is that it's agreed in advance and applied consistently. Disputes over money almost always come down to a lack of transparency rather than a genuine disagreement.

Tracking Who Got What

Beyond splitting the fee, you need a record. If a member asks in six months what you made at the casino night in February, you should be able to answer. This is especially important at tax time, when each member needs to declare their own income accurately.

Keeping a record also protects you as the band leader. If there's ever a question about whether someone was paid correctly, you can show exactly what was paid, when, and to whom.
