Australian Tax Invoice Requirements for Musicians
The ATO has specific requirements for what counts as a valid tax invoice. Here's what musicians need to know — and what happens if your invoice doesn't comply.
When you're registered for GST, an invoice isn't just a payment request — it's a tax document. For your client to claim a GST credit on what they paid you, you need to give them a valid tax invoice. If your invoice is missing required information, their accountant will flag it, and you'll get a call asking you to reissue.
This guide covers exactly what the ATO requires so your invoices are right the first time.
When You Need to Issue a Tax Invoice
If you're registered for GST, you must issue a tax invoice for any taxable sale over $82.50 (including GST). For most gigs, this means every invoice you send needs to be a proper tax invoice.
If you're not registered for GST, you issue regular invoices without a GST component. These don't need to say "Tax Invoice" and don't need to include a GST breakdown. Find out if you need to register for GST.
What Must Be on a Tax Invoice
The ATO requires tax invoices to include: the words "Tax Invoice" clearly displayed; your identity (name or business name); your ABN; the date the invoice was issued; a brief description of what was supplied; the GST amount (either as a separate line or a statement that the total includes GST); and the total price including GST.
For invoices over $1,000, you also need the recipient's identity — the client's name or business name. For most gig invoices this is good practice regardless of the amount.
Common Errors That Invalidate an Invoice
Missing ABN is the most common problem. If your ABN isn't on the invoice, the client's accountant cannot process the GST credit — and in some cases the client is required to withhold 47% of the payment under the ATO's no-ABN withholding rules.
Not saying "Tax Invoice" is another. A document that says "Invoice" when you're a GST-registered entity isn't technically compliant, even if all the amounts are correct.
A single total without a GST breakdown is also an issue. The client needs to see the GST component as its own line — typically labelled "GST (10%)" — separate from the ex-GST amount.
Simplified Tax Invoices
For sales between $82.50 and $1,000 (including GST), you can issue a simplified tax invoice. This doesn't require the recipient's identity — which is the main simplification for small gig invoices. The other required fields remain the same.
Getting It Right With Dashplan
Dashplan's invoice maker generates ATO-compliant tax invoices automatically. When you mark a gig as GST-applicable, the GST component is calculated and displayed as a separate line. Your ABN is stored in settings and appears on every invoice. The "Tax Invoice" heading is always present when GST is included.
If you're not registered for GST, the same template generates a clean invoice without the GST component — no "Tax Invoice" heading and no GST line. You don't need to manage two different templates.
