How to Build a Click Track for a 5-Piece Function Band
Function bands play long sets of varied repertoire to non-musicians. A click track with section cues keeps the show tight — here's how to build one.
A five-piece function band covering thirty songs across a three-hour show has a lot of moving parts. Arrangements vary, songs you haven't played in months come up on request, and the room is full of people who expect everything to feel effortless. A click track with section cues is one of the best tools you can add to make that effortlessness real.
Why Function Bands Benefit Most from Section Cues
Most function bands don't rehearse every song every week. You have a core repertoire of fifty or sixty tracks, you play twenty-five of them on the night, and the set isn't confirmed until the week before. That means someone is always guessing at arrangements.
Section cues solve this. When a cue fires in your ear — "Bridge" or "Key Change" — one bar before the moment arrives, the whole band can play with confidence even if they haven't touched the song in six months.
How to Map the Bar Structure of Each Song
Before you can build a click track, you need the BPM and the bar count for each section of each song. The process is the same for every track: find the recording, tap tempo to get the BPM, then count bars in each section — intro, verse, chorus, and so on.
Write it down. Intro: 8 bars. Verse: 16 bars. Chorus: 8 bars. Pre-chorus: 4 bars. Bridge: 8 bars. Outro: 8 bars. That's your map. You'll use it to place cues on the timeline.
Building the Click Track File
Once you have your bar maps and BPMs, open Dashplan's Click Track Builder and set the BPM and time signature. Drag section cue chips onto the bar ruler at the right positions — Intro, Verse, Chorus, and so on. Set your count-in bars, choose your click tone, and export as WAV.
Build one WAV per song, or chain them together with gap bars between each track for a seamless set file. Either approach works — the choice comes down to how you prefer to operate your playback rig on the night.
Running the Click Live with a 5-Piece
With five players, the most practical approach is drummer-only click with section cues audible to whoever needs them — often the musical director or keys player as well. Route the click file through your IEM mix and run a simple playback app on a phone or tablet in the drum riser.
Keep a backup file on a second device. Function bands playing corporate and wedding gigs can't afford playback failures — a spare phone with the same files loaded takes about thirty seconds to set up as insurance.
