What Is a Wedge Monitor in Music?
A wedge monitor is the angled speaker at a performer's feet that lets them hear themselves on stage. Here's how they work and when they make sense.
If you've ever looked at a live stage and wondered what the triangular speakers on the floor are, those are wedge monitors — and they're one of the most important pieces of gear in any live performance setup. Understanding what they do, how they work, and when to use them will help you get a better sound on stage every time you play.
The name comes from the shape. A wedge monitor is a loudspeaker in a tapered, angled cabinet — wide at the back, narrow at the front — designed to sit on the floor and point upward toward a performer's face. Most stages you play will already have them as part of the house PA.
Why You Need Stage Monitoring at All
When a band plays live, the main PA speakers point outward at the audience. From the performer's position, they're facing the wrong way. Without something pointing back at you, all you hear is your own amp (if you have one), a wash of noise from your bandmates, and none of the mix that the audience is getting.
Stage monitoring solves this. Wedges carry a custom mix to each performer — typically their own voice or instrument plus whatever else they need to hear to stay in time and in tune. Without a decent monitor mix, even technically solid musicians struggle to play well, because they're compensating for what they can't hear.

How a Wedge Monitor Works
A wedge receives a feed from the front-of-house or monitor desk — usually a separate monitor desk at larger venues, or an auxiliary send from the main desk at smaller ones. Each wedge position can have its own mix, so the guitarist can hear more guitar and less keys, while the vocalist gets their own voice up front. The engineer balances all of this through sends from the desk.
Most wedges are passive, meaning they need a separate power amplifier to drive them. Some are active (self-powered), with a built-in amp, which simplifies the signal chain and is common in smaller venue setups and backline hire packages.
Driver sizes vary — 12-inch and 15-inch woofers are most common for stage monitors. A 12-inch wedge is lighter and clearer, good for vocals and mid-range instruments. A 15-inch moves more air and handles bass-heavy mixes or loud stages better. Most hired backline packages include one or two sizes of each.
Wedge Problems and How to Avoid Them
Wedges come with a trade-off: they add to stage volume. Multiple wedges running loud in a small room can make the stage sound chaotic, and feedback — the piercing squeal you hear when a microphone picks up its own output from a nearby speaker — is a constant risk when wedges are placed and angled incorrectly.
This is why placement matters. A wedge should be directly in front of the performer and angled toward the back of their head, not the microphone capsule. A well-placed wedge is much harder to feed back than one that's been shoved wherever there was room on the stage.
Volume creep is another common issue: each band member asks for more of themselves, the engineer turns up, and soon every wedge is running at maximum and the room sounds like a traffic jam. Knowing what you actually need in your monitor mix — and asking for that specifically rather than "more everything" — makes the engineer's job easier and your stage sound better.
Wedges vs In-Ear Monitors
In-ear monitors (IEMs) are the modern alternative. Instead of a speaker on the floor, the performer wears a small earpiece carrying a wireless personal mix. In-ears eliminate stage volume almost entirely, which cleans up the room considerably and makes life much easier for the front-of-house engineer.
The trade-off is cost and feel. A proper IEM setup with personal mix units is a significant investment compared to a set of borrowed venue wedges, and some players miss the physical sensation of hearing through the air. Many bands run a hybrid setup — some players on in-ears, others on wedges — which is fine as long as your stage plot makes it clear.

Noting Wedges on Your Stage Plot
Every wedge position should appear on your stage plot: where it sits, which performer it's for, and what rough mix they need. This isn't just tidy paperwork — it's the information the engineer uses to set up before you even arrive at the venue.
A typical wedge note on a stage plot might say "Vocals + keys low in mix" or "Drums and bass only." The more specific you are, the faster the setup and the better your monitor mix from the first check.
